Hmmmm. I guess the large booths are glitzy and provide lots of fun gifts, but, in my experience, the pedagogical depth seems to get shallower as one approaches the expensive real estate of the exhibit floor at NECC.

You present a captivating summary of NECC 09. I was there, and have to admit that your description is dead on reality as I saw it. I'm sorry to say, however, that I didn't even see the Smithsonian booth. The Library of Congress at least had a motor home display. Had I seen him, I probably would have stopped by to lend some cheer to the guy who looked very lonely in your picture.

The vendor booths were awesome in my opinion. While they were obviously out for marketing, they also were teaching anyone who would take time to sit for a demonstration. I learned a lot just hopping from one exhibit to another. And they were very generous with their gifts too. My college-aged son, who attended with me, and I each walked away with eight tee shirts, an umbrella, zip drives, bags, and more. I also won a subscription to Qwizdom - though I still have to figure out what it is. I was irritated that I lost a set of classroom responders to a woman who joined the demonstration 15 minutes into a 20 minute presentation. I wanted to jump up and say, "Unfair! She wasn't here for the whole show!" but fortunately my son gave me a scowl. He knew what I was thinking.

I'm all ready to sign up for NECC 2010 in Denver and I'm taking a group of colleagues with me.
